Northern Midlands was born out of a need for a Sporting Clay range in the Launceston area of northern Tasmania. The need for a range which presented both National and International quality targets was sadly lacking in Tasmania.

In December of 2001 a meeting of interested Sporting Clay enthusiasts was convened at the Perth primary school and at that meeting it was agreed that a club should be formed, the name we adopted was NORTHERN MIDLANDS SPORTING CLAYS Inc.

A committee was elected and a constitution was adopted, so the beginning of countless hours of paperwork began to get us up and running. The club applied for affiliation with Tasmanian Field & Game Association and through this with Field and Game Federation of Australia, opening up the opportunity for members to compete at national events and all international FITASC events.

The owners of “RHODES”, the Gatenby family, agreed to allow the club to set up its sporting clay range on their property. Our first competition shoot was held in May of 2002. We had one automatic trap which belonged to one of our members and a few old second hand manual traps plus quite a few other manual traps lent to us by Geelong Sporting Clays.

We hosted the Nationals in 2003, very successfully. With a grant from Events Tasmania we were able to purchase four more automatic traps. Since then, through other grants, we now have seven auto’s and with others lent to us by members we have been conducting all of our shoots with automatic traps for some considerable time.

At the 2005 National Championships we had three members bring home National titles.
